Chico CA 95929
The Chico Animal Rights and Education Series (CARES) meets on Tuesday, May 10 from 7-9 pm, at Trinity Hall, Room 126 at Chico State. The group will be reading Chapter 2 from The Sexual Politics of Meat, the groundbreaking book by Carol J. Adams. We will be learning about and discussing the concept of “the absent referent.”
Every meal of meat is an absence, the death of the animal whose place the meat takes: this is the “absent referent.” The absent referent functions to cloak the violence inherent to meat eating, to protect the conscience of the meat eater and render the idea of individual animals as immaterial to anyone’s selfish desires.
As usual, the discussion will be moderated by Robert Jones, animal rights philosophy professor at Chico State.
